During the prompting period, we've heard from several people who'd like to see the challenge expanded in various ways -- allowing more fandoms, allowing more kinds of relationships -- and we're thrilled to see so much interest! We'll definitely take all these things into consideration when it's time to plan for round two. (Look at us -- we haven't even finished the first part of round one yet, and already thinking about round two. You've shown us so much enthusiasm!)

But we also worry about having this challenge get too broadly focused for us to be able to keep up with it or promote it effectively. We chose the current limits because these are parts of fandom where we have some personal investment, and because it's really important to us to encourage more representation of queer women's relationships.

So if this round isn't entirely meeting your needs, we'll see what we can do next time but we'd also like to encourage you to think about whether you could organize something that would provide what you're looking for yourself -- on your own or with a friend or two. The excitement people have shown for yuri_challenge shows that there's a lot of enthusiasm around DW for female-character-focused events. If there's something in particular that you'd really love to see, chances are you're not alone!

Allowing more fandoms meaning expanding beyond anime, manga, manhua, manhwa, and video games? B-b-but that's one of the things that got me most excited about it! Those fandoms often seem to get lost in the sauce in many bigger femslash things--& if they don't, it's usually the bigger fandoms w/in these categories. I am hoping this challenge will draw some attention & love towards the smaller fandoms ones. ;_;

Also on a larger note, I appreciate that one challenge can never be all things to all people... & also the "if you build it, they will come" DW mentality (which works w/varying levels of success, but isn't that true anywhere?).

^_^ As one of the people who asked for more fandoms, I can say that what I asked for was an inclusion of Jdramas, Kdramas, and Jmovies that didn't have anime/manga/game predecessors or accompaniments. Small fandoms, most of them, as many of the biggest got adaptations after the fact.

I absolutely agree that opening up to non-East Asia sources would totally miss the point of this challenge. XD

Yeah, I don't know what other people were asking for, but for my question, the mods just said something along the lines of "late in the game to add them, but thanks for the idea!" It's possible other peeps asked for broader stuff.

Ha, I always tend to assume people are like, "let my big Western fandoms in!" cuz they seem to do that everywhere else. Glad it's not the case here.

Japanese light novels are what I thought of but didn't ask about. Not that I know any that weren't adapted into anime form. But they're there, and tons of anime is based on them. More to the point, what if one was prompting characters from non-animated parts of a light novel series?

I hadn't thought of this, but you have a good point. Minor roles (or later ones) for women might not appear in the anime/manga adaptations. Juunikokuki comes to mind as an example. Though I suspect that if you've already prompted characters like this for this round the mods probably aren't going to weed them out, due to time constraints and the fact that they're pretty easy-going folks. ^_^

Yes! These are very much the issues that have been coming up for us as we try to figure out how to deal with the possibility of expanding. I look at things like femslash_kink and while I'm really happy that they have active participation, I feel like it's so much a western-TV-fandom space that the things I'm fannish about would get lost in the shuffle.

I really hope we can come to a good balance! This first round came together pretty quickly, and is honestly bigger than I expected it to be -- by the time the second round comes, I hope we'll have had a chance to work out good answers to these questions. ^^

Oh yeah, femslash_kink was totally one of the things I was thinking of--I know they only just opened for prompting, but in 4 pages of prompts I don't think there was a single one that would qualify for this challenge. ;_;

It's exciting that there have been so many prompts for this! (Here's hoping I can actually write some of them, sob.)

I was wondering if J/C/K-drama prompts could be included next time? I do realize that would be expanding the scope of the challenge, but I thought it would be in keeping with the current fandoms (especially since a lot of Asian dramas are live-action adaptations of manga/manhwa/manhua). Of course, it's the mods' prerogative to decide!

It's still a bit early to say so for the time being but we're definitely considering it! We want to see how this first round pans out before we start talking about the next round though.

...Though given how many forms of Asian media are already allowed, the magic 8 ball says "chances are high." ;)
