Prompt: Any fandom, any pairing, Just hold on to me, I'll hold on to you
They all change on the court. With the sand hot beneath their feet, and the sun warm against their skin, they are pared down to a this: a fierce strength, and the unwavering desire for victory. When Kotomi stands before the net, she feels sharper, clearer. She brings all the best of herself to the game, and leaves her everyday worries behind.
She is Mach 3, and she can fly.
Iruka steps onto the court, and she becomes something altogether different. Iruka gains more than strength and determination. She gives herself up entirely to the game. Iruka chases her dreams without wavering, without stopping. She will wear herself down to nothing for volleyball. She will bleed for volleyball. She will, and she has, and Kotomi sometimes thinks she has never known anyone as terrifying as Nanase Iruka.
Iruka rushes headlong into the future, and she grows in strength and experience with every step. She doesn't look back. Kotomi knows that she is skilled, and that she has earned her place at Iruka's side. She wonders if it is enough: if she is enough. There is no room for doubt on the court, but in the never-ending moment between here and there, Kotomi watches the proud line of Iruka's back, and wonders how long she can keep up.
With all of her heart, Kotomi wants to play, and she wants to win. She knows, too, that she wants to do both at Iruka's side. Kotomi is a little bit in love with Iruka. It is impossible not to be a little bit in love with Iruka. She faces the world with a smile that makes Kotomi's heart race. They are partners on the court, and Kotomi and Iruka share a heart--it beats strong and steady between them. Kotomi is certain that there is no moment so romantic as meeting Iruka's eyes across the sand, sharing smile for smile in a moment of perfect understanding.
Kotomi digs her toes into the sand, and shifts her weight: ready, waiting. The sound of the audience grows dim, and fades. There is nothing but the beating of her own heart, and the anticipatory tensing of her muscles. Kotomi is brilliantly alive, and everything she wants is ready for her, waiting only on Kotomi's bravery.
"It's coming," Iruka says.
The game is fast and brutal. Their victory is not assured to the very last. By the end, Kotomi's legs are too weak to support her. She collapses without grace, spreads her hands out wide behind her, and turns her face towards the impossibly blue sky. Kotomi's breathing eases gradually; it takes longer for the fine trembling of her muscles to stop. The audience is cheering, carrying Iruka's name with it. Kotomi smiles, and opens her eyes.
Iruka is kneeling in front of Kotomi. Sand clings to her sweat-damp skin: thighs and shoulders, and even the curve of her breasts. Her arms are painfully red where the ball struck. Iruka's bangs are plastered to her slick forehead, and when she smiles, she is the most beautiful thing Kotomi has ever seen.
Kotomi lifts her hand, and waves vaguely towards the crowd. "You're everyone's hero, you know," she says.
Iruka is not above arrogance, but she dips her head in something that is almost embarrassment. Her skin is too hot, and her hands sticky, but Kotomi does not hesitate to take Iruka's proffered hands. "I know I can fly freely because I have you beside me," Iruka says, and then she is laughing and rushing into their friends' arms.
Iruka makes it easy for Kotomi to follow her, and so Kotomi will until the very end.
